How to detect AI deepfake videos

The Philippines is increasingly adopting artificial intelligence technologies, but it’s crucial for Filipinos to understand how to navigate the potential risks, particularly the rise of AI deepfake videos. Recently, Star Music, representing P-pop group BINI, expressed their intent to combat inappropriate deepfake clips of their artists.

To detect AI deepfake videos, experts suggest you look for subtle signs of manipulation. Begin by closely examining the face for any discrepancies in age representation. Pay attention to the eyes and shadows, as these might not realistically mimic real-life behavior. Excessive glare can also indicate AI generation, as can inconsistencies in facial hair. Additionally, you should assess lip movements and blinking for normality; abnormalities here are red flags. Always verify the video source—unknown origins often signify the possibility of deepfake content.

As technology evolves, even experienced individuals can be misled, but by following these guidelines, you can sharpen your ability to critically evaluate content before sharing it, fostering a more responsible online environment and reducing the spread of misinformation.

Elon Musk’s AI startup is said to discuss revenue sharing with Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)

On September 8, 2024, it was reported that Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is in discussions with Tesla, Inc. about entering a revenue-sharing agreement. This potential deal would see xAI provide technology and resources to Tesla in exchange for a share of the revenues generated by the electric car manufacturer.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the agreement would enhance the collaboration between Musk’s various companies. Tesla plans to utilize xAI’s AI models to improve its driver-assistance software known as Full Self-Driving. In return, a portion of the revenue from this initiative would be shared with xAI. Additionally, xAI is set to assist in developing new features at Tesla, which could include a voice-activated assistant within Tesla’s vehicles and software for its humanoid robot, Optimus.

However, Musk publicly denied the report, stating that no licensing agreement with xAI is necessary. He emphasized that Tesla has gained valuable insights from xAI engineers that have aided in achieving unsupervised Full Self-Driving capabilities.

The specifics of the revenue-sharing arrangement would likely depend on how much Tesla depends on xAI’s technology for its projects. Executives at xAI are reportedly considering a 50-50 split of the revenue derived from Tesla’s Full Self-Driving features.

A potential partnership would align with Musk’s approach of intertwining resources across his business empire. Nevertheless, some Tesla shareholders have raised concerns over these arrangements, alleging that diverting resources to xAI could adversely impact Tesla’s investors. Legal action concerning these claims is currently pending in the Delaware Court of Chancery.

“Tesla has learned a lot from discussions with engineers at xAI,” Elon Musk stated, reinforcing his dismissal of the revenue-sharing claims.

The Rise Of Deepfakes Means CEOs Need To Rethink Trust

**The Rise of Deepfakes: Rethinking Trust in Business**

Artificial Intelligence is driving a seismic shift in how businesses operate, prompting CEOs to reevaluate crucial fundamentals, particularly trust. Recent reports indicate a sharp rise in social engineering attacks, which now make up a significant portion of cybersecurity threats. As corporate leaders become more visible, they are increasingly vulnerable to these tactics. The proliferation of AI models has made it easier for malicious actors to create convincing deepfakes using publicly available information.

In 2020, warnings about the potential misuse of deepfakes were raised, but the current scale of exploitation for social engineering is alarming. A case involving a Hong Kong banker who participated in a video conference filled with deepfake participants, including the company’s CFO, highlights the risks, leading to a significant financial loss.

**Investing in Cybersecurity: Building Trust**

To combat these threats, cybersecurity strategies often mirror military tactics, such as the red team/blue team model. Organizations must ensure their defenses are well-resourced, as attackers can easily shift targets. Comprehensive training and integration of cybersecurity practices across all levels of the organization are crucial for fostering a culture of awareness and resilience.

**Equipping Team Blue: Strategies for Improved Cyber Defense**

Numerous companies are embedding trust within their digital operations, with notable acquisitions emphasizing the market potential of trust-based cybersecurity solutions. However, leadership must recognize that a singular approach may not suffice; diverse strategies are necessary to bolster defenses against sophisticated attacks. Financial institutions are enhancing phone transaction security with step-up authentication, although the efficacy of such methods depends on the right technological tools.

**The Importance of Context in Cybersecurity**

Context plays a vital role in fostering trust. Recognizing unique aspects of employee interactions can help safeguard against deepfake threats. Organizations should implement protocols that create an internal context, reinforcing trust among members. Proactive measures, including unique signals known only to employees, can significantly improve security. By promoting awareness of trust-related issues within corporate culture, businesses can better prepare to address the challenges posed by deepfakes.

Deepfake video shows Tim Walz dancing in cowboy outfit

**FACT CHECK: DEEPFAKE VIDEO SHOWS TIM WALZ DANCING IN COWBOY OUTFIT**

The video has been digitally altered. The face of the dancer was changed to resemble Walz.

A September 5 Instagram video shows a man in a cowboy outfit and glasses dancing in an elevator lobby. The video is captioned, “This is Kamala’s VP Running Mate, Tim Waltz (sic).” Within a day, it garnered over 400 likes.

**OUR RATING: ALTERED**

Experts confirm that the video is digitally edited. The dancer’s face was manipulated to look like Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is the Democratic nominee for Vice President. However, the original footage does not feature Walz.

**VIDEO INCLUDES INDICATORS OF DIGITAL MANIPULATION**

Walter Scheirer, an engineering professor at the University of Notre Dame, highlighted that the video appears to be a “very obvious face swap using a deepfake-like algorithm.” He noted several discrepancies, including blurring effects and inconsistent lighting, which are characteristic of low-quality deepfakes. Importantly, the original video posted in February clearly shows a different dancer who does not wear glasses.

This isn’t the first time Walz’s likeness has been misused. Similar manipulated videos circulated in August, falsely presenting Walz dancing in a cowboy hat with money tucked into his belt, displaying analogs of digital manipulation.

The Instagram user who shared this video failed to provide any supporting evidence when contacted by USA TODAY.

**OUR FACT-CHECK SOURCES:**
– Walter Scheirer, September 6, Email exchange with USA TODAY
– @krumpmasterkrump, February 19, Instagram post
– USA TODAY, August 27, “No, Tim Walz isn’t the cowboy dancer in this video”

FBI busts musician’s elaborate AI-powered $10M streaming-royalty heist

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors charged a North Carolina musician with defrauding streaming services of $10 million through an elaborate scheme involving AI. Michael Smith, 52, allegedly used AI to create hundreds of thousands of fake songs by nonexistent bands, then streamed them using bots to collect royalties from platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

The charges, announced by US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, include wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. If convicted, Smith could face up to 20 years in prison for each charge. Prosecutors claim that for seven years, Smith created thousands of fake streaming accounts with purchased email addresses, using software to play his AI-generated music on repeat across various computers, simulating individual listeners.

His fabricated catalog reportedly accumulated billions of streams, with Smith generating unique names for the AI-created artists and songs to blend in with legitimate acts. Initially uploading his own original music, Smith found limited success, prompting a shift to AI-generated music in 2018, which he began developing with the help of an undisclosed AI music company CEO.

By 2019, Smith’s scheme was highly lucrative, reportedly earning him about $110,000 monthly. However, when confronted about reports of streaming abuse, Smith strongly denied any wrongdoing, insisting there was “absolutely no fraud going on whatsoever.”

Generative AI backlash hits annual writing event, prompting resignations

**As the AI World Turns —**
**Generative AI Backlash Hits Annual Writing Event, Prompting Resignations**
*By Benj Edwards* – September 4, 2024

Over the weekend, the nonprofit National Novel Writing Month organization (NaNoWriMo) published an FAQ outlining its position on AI, calling the outright rejection of AI writing technology “classist” and “ableist.” This statement triggered significant backlash online, leading to the resignation of four board members and prompting a sponsor to withdraw support.

NaNoWriMo, famous for its annual challenge where participants write a 50,000-word manuscript in November, argued that condemning AI would overlook issues of class and ability. The organization suggested that the technology could assist those who may otherwise need to hire human writing assistants or have different cognitive abilities.

**Writers React**
After news of the FAQ spread, many writers on social media expressed their discontent with NaNoWriMo’s stance. Generative AI models are often trained on vast amounts of existing text, including copyrighted works, without proper attribution or compensation to the original authors. Critics argue this raises serious ethical concerns regarding the use of such tools in creative writing competitions.

“Generative AI empowers not the artist, not the writer, but the tech industry. It steals content to remake content,” stated Chuck Wendig, author of *Star Wars: Aftermath*, in a post about NaNoWriMo on his blog.

Daniel José Older, a lead story architect for *Star Wars: The High Republic* and one of the resigning board members, publicly stepped down, stating, “Hello @NaNoWriMo, this is me DJO officially stepping down from your Writers Board and urging every writer I know to do the same.”

NaNoWriMo’s choice of words like “classist” and “ableist” to justify the potential use of generative AI struck a nerve with many opponents of the technology, some of whom are disabled themselves. One X user expressed their frustration, saying, “Other people’s work is NOT accessibility.”

This isn’t NaNoWriMo’s first encounter with controversy. Last year, the organization announced it would accept AI-assisted submissions but emphasized that using AI for an entire novel would defeat the challenge’s purpose.

**NaNoWriMo Doubles Down**
In response to the backlash, NaNoWriMo updated its FAQ to address concerns regarding AI’s impact on the writing industry and to mention “bad actors in the AI space who are doing harm to writers.”

“We recognize that although we find the categorical condemnation of AI problematic, we are troubled by situational abuse of AI that clearly conflicts with our values,” they stated. The organization acknowledged the complexity of AI technology and emphasized its commitment to maintaining an inclusive stance.

In recent years, NaNoWriMo has received messages from disabled individuals who use generative AI tools and has conducted interviews with artists who rely on these technologies for creativity. Ultimately, the organization articulated that it respects writers who believe that AI tools can be beneficial.

“We absolutely do not condemn AI,” NaNoWriMo declared in their FAQ, “and we respect writers who believe these tools are right for them. We acknowledge the diversity of opinions within our community and the autonomy it provides.”

Can AI replace humanity?

**Opinion: Can AI Replace Humanity?**

In today’s world, increasingly influenced by technology and **artificial intelligence (AI)**, a key question arises: what aspects of human experience remain beyond AI’s reach? Creativity, a defining human trait, stands as a clear distinction between humans and AI. Other qualities that set us apart include **empathy**, **morality**, **self-awareness**, **emotional intelligence**, and **intuition**.

As a neurologist treating patients with Parkinson’s disease at **Beilinson Hospital**, I have been intrigued by how harnessing creative impulses may alleviate some of the motor symptoms related to this condition.

**Creativity** is often described as the capacity to generate new, valuable ideas or solutions. It involves not just thinking outside the box, but also connecting disparate concepts in novel ways. This realm is where AI struggles to compete, as human creativity is deeply subjective, influenced by individual experiences and emotions—elements that AI cannot replicate.

Within the business sector, creativity drives innovation, strategic planning, and brand differentiation. For instance, the development of new products and marketing strategies relies heavily on a profound understanding of human needs and aesthetics—insights that AI, despite its data analysis capabilities, cannot capture fully.

Similarly, in technology, creativity fuels progress in software development, user experience design, and innovative applications. Major breakthroughs often stem from the ability to envision entirely new paradigms, as illustrated by Tim Berners-Lee’s vision for the **World Wide Web**. His idea was not merely about networking computers but creating a universal space for information sharing, revealing the profound social impact of technology—an aspect beyond AI’s capabilities to predict.

AI has indeed revolutionized many facets of life, but it cannot emulate **emotional intelligence** or **empathy**, which are essential for effective leadership and consulting roles. Although AI can analyze sentiment, it lacks the nuanced understanding that comes from genuine human emotion.

Furthermore, while AI can be programmed with ethical guidelines, it lacks the moral reasoning that humans possess. Human moral thought is shaped by cultural and social contexts—elements challenging to replicate in machines. Likewise, machines cannot achieve self-awareness or intuition, both crucial for navigating complex, dynamic environments.

In response to the question of whether artificial intelligence will replace humans, the current consensus leans towards **no**. The human brain’s complex neural networks, capable of innovation and problem-solving in uniquely human ways, remain beyond AI’s reach.
