Marketer Behind Fake Quotes in ‘Megalopolis’ Trailer Dropped by Lionsgate

Eddie Egan, a marketing consultant, lost his position with Lionsgate after the studio discovered the use of fabricated quotes in a trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s film, *Megalopolis*. The teaser, which was promptly recalled, suggested that critics had historically disparaged Coppola’s works, raising questions about their credibility. However, the quotes attributed to well-known critics, including a purported one from Pauline Kael in *The New Yorker*, were never published and misrepresented her views on *The Godfather*.

Sources indicate that Egan likely used artificial intelligence tools to generate these misleading quotes. Upon recognizing the issue, Lionsgate acted quickly to address the situation, expressing deep regret for the oversight. The studio released a statement apologizing to the involved critics, Coppola, and American Zoetrope for what they deemed an inexcusable error in their vetting process.

The incident has sparked wider discussions about authenticity in film marketing, resonating beyond just *Megalopolis*, which features a star-studded cast and is set for release on September 27.

Meta and Spotify CEOs criticize AI regulation in the EU

Meta and Spotify CEOs, Mark Zuckerberg and Daniel Ek, are expressing concerns over the impact of EU AI regulations on innovation, particularly regarding open-source AI. They argue that existing privacy regulations are impeding Meta’s ability to train AI models on public data from its platforms, which could hinder the development of powerful AI that reflects European culture. As a consequence, Meta plans to withhold its next multimodal AI model, including features for image comprehension, from EU users.

Spotify emphasizes the importance of open-source AI for its streaming success, advocating for a regulatory environment that fosters innovation and supports European developers. Both companies are united in their criticism of regulation that inhibits AI advancements, while also sharing a common opposition to Apple’s App Store practices, which they consider monopolistic.

Fraud tactics and the growing prevalence of AI scams

**FRAUD TACTICS AND THE GROWING PREVALENCE OF AI SCAMS**

In the first half of 2024, Hiya flagged nearly 20 billion calls as suspected spam, averaging more than 107 million spam calls each day. The data revealed spam flagging rates exceeding 20% for unknown calls across 25 out of 42 countries, with some flag rates soaring above 50%.

This period also witnessed a surge in AI deepfake scams, utilizing AI-generated voice-cloning technology to impersonate individuals or organizations. For example, ahead of the primary election in January, voters in New Hampshire received robocalls mimicking Joe Biden’s voice.

As AI tools grow in power and accessibility, researchers predict that tactics involving voice-cloning impersonation scams will continue to escalate throughout 2024 and beyond.

**MEDICARE AND INSURANCE SCAMS CONTINUE TO TARGET AMERICANS**

During the first half of 2024, Americans received an average of 14 spam calls per month, with varied spam flagging rates by state. Health insurance and Medicare scams dominated the landscape, followed by various other insurance-related frauds.

**FRANCE AND SPAIN CONTINUE TO HAVE THE WORST SPAM ACROSS EUROPE FOR THE PAST SEVEN QUARTERS**

In France and Spain, more than half of all unknown calls were unwanted, with spam flagging rates at 53% and 51%, respectively. Commonly reported fraud calls included utility and mobile phone scams.

**UK RESIDENTS ARE TARGETED WITH TAX AGENCY AND AMAZON SCAMS**

In the UK, the spam flagging rate for unknown calls was 28%, with 3% being fraudulent. Notable scams included tax fraud and scams involving Amazon.

**BRAZILIANS RECEIVE THE MOST SPAM CALLS PER MONTH ACROSS THE GLOBE**

Brazilians experienced an average of 26 spam calls per month, with over half classified as spam.

**AMAZON SCAMS SURGED ACROSS CANADA**

Canadians received an average of 4 spam calls each month, with 7% deemed fraudulent, particularly in Amazon scams.

“Phone fraud, spam, and the emerging use of AI-driven deepfake voice scams are escalating threats to the voice channel,” said Kush Parikh, President of Hiya. “Voice security must be swiftly integrated into cybersecurity strategies, as it represents a significant vulnerability in protecting enterprises.”

Google agreed to pay millions for California news. Journalists call it a bad deal

Google is set to provide California with millions to support local journalism jobs in what is being described as a first-in-the-nation deal. However, media experts criticize the agreement, suggesting it primarily benefits the tech giant. The deal, announced this week, redirects significant public and private funding to local news organizations, but critics argue it is a political maneuver to sidestep a bill that would have mandated ongoing payments from tech companies to news publishers.

The agreement, totaling $250 million, will fund journalism initiatives and a new AI research program, but guarantees financing for only five years. With approximately $110 million earmarked from Google and an additional $70 million from the state, the initiative will be managed by UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Critics note the deal doesn’t impose a “link tax” that could have significantly increased funding for journalism, a model influenced by similar legislation in Canada.

While tech companies, including Google, previously resisted legislative efforts, they seem to be shifting their stance amidst declining traditional media revenues. However, dissent persists, particularly from journalist unions, which express frustration over being excluded from negotiations. The deal has sparked debate over the future of journalism and the role of tech companies in supporting it, especially amid concerns that AI tools may ultimately replace human journalists. The agreement is set to take effect next year, pending finalization of its details.

Can AI replace humanity?

**Opinion: Can AI Replace Humanity?**

In today’s world, increasingly influenced by technology and **artificial intelligence (AI)**, a key question arises: what aspects of human experience remain beyond AI’s reach? Creativity, a defining human trait, stands as a clear distinction between humans and AI. Other qualities that set us apart include **empathy**, **morality**, **self-awareness**, **emotional intelligence**, and **intuition**.

As a neurologist treating patients with Parkinson’s disease at **Beilinson Hospital**, I have been intrigued by how harnessing creative impulses may alleviate some of the motor symptoms related to this condition.

**Creativity** is often described as the capacity to generate new, valuable ideas or solutions. It involves not just thinking outside the box, but also connecting disparate concepts in novel ways. This realm is where AI struggles to compete, as human creativity is deeply subjective, influenced by individual experiences and emotions—elements that AI cannot replicate.

Within the business sector, creativity drives innovation, strategic planning, and brand differentiation. For instance, the development of new products and marketing strategies relies heavily on a profound understanding of human needs and aesthetics—insights that AI, despite its data analysis capabilities, cannot capture fully.

Similarly, in technology, creativity fuels progress in software development, user experience design, and innovative applications. Major breakthroughs often stem from the ability to envision entirely new paradigms, as illustrated by Tim Berners-Lee’s vision for the **World Wide Web**. His idea was not merely about networking computers but creating a universal space for information sharing, revealing the profound social impact of technology—an aspect beyond AI’s capabilities to predict.

AI has indeed revolutionized many facets of life, but it cannot emulate **emotional intelligence** or **empathy**, which are essential for effective leadership and consulting roles. Although AI can analyze sentiment, it lacks the nuanced understanding that comes from genuine human emotion.

Furthermore, while AI can be programmed with ethical guidelines, it lacks the moral reasoning that humans possess. Human moral thought is shaped by cultural and social contexts—elements challenging to replicate in machines. Likewise, machines cannot achieve self-awareness or intuition, both crucial for navigating complex, dynamic environments.

In response to the question of whether artificial intelligence will replace humans, the current consensus leans towards **no**. The human brain’s complex neural networks, capable of innovation and problem-solving in uniquely human ways, remain beyond AI’s reach.

Tiger Global is set to join OpenAI’s funding round, which is generating significant buzz and could give the artificial intelligence startup a valuation exceeding $150 billion. Sources indicate that Thrive Capital is at the helm of this round with plans to invest $1 billion. Additionally, tech giants like Microsoft, Nvidia, and Apple are reportedly in talks to join this investment.

Earlier this year, OpenAI had an estimated valuation of $80 billion, compared to $29 billion the previous year. The company has reportedly surpassed $2 billion in annual revenue as of early this year, experiencing rapid growth following the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022. This momentum has continued with new products aimed at businesses and expansions into AI-generated content, with weekly active users doubling from late last year to reach 200 million.
